Signs of Sleep Disorder

By larissabrown at 2010-11-18 04:31:13
Sleep disorders (also sometimes referred to as somnipathy) are disorders that interrupt a person's normal sleep patterns. In order for a sleep disorder to be classified as such, it must take place on a more or less regular basis. Occasional or rare sleep disruptions do not constitute as sleep disorders. Some sleep disorders cause problems with mental and emotional functioning while others manifest themselves in physical ways.

Symptoms of RBD Sleep Disorder

The main symptom of RBD sleep disorder is the loss of muscle control while in the REM stage of sleep. There are also other sleep conditions which go along with the RBD sleep disorder. Some of these sleep conditions include sleepwalking, narcolepsy and night terrors. Again, the symptoms will vary with each individual with regard to frequency and intensity.

Considering people sleep, on average, for about a third of their life, it is easy to see why living with someone with a snoring sleep disorder can be so debilitating. In fact, partners of people with a snoring sleep disorder frequently end up leaving their partners.

The treatments for sleep disorders today can be generally grouped into three categories: behavioral or psychotherapeutic treatments, sleep medications or drugs and treatments that don't fit into the other two categories. The excessive sleep disorder narcolepsy will cause most patients to have unexpected periods of sleep throughout the day for as little as a few minutes to as long as half an hour at times.

There are several disorders that do not affect your ability to get to sleep but instead happen during sleep. Bruxism is just such an example. This is a condition where the person grinds his teeth involuntarily while they sleep. According to sleep disorder studies, this affects over 20 million people in the USA. Another condition that has been discovered by sleep disorder studies is that of the delayed sleep phase syndrome, a condition that makes it hard to fall asleep and also to wake up in the morning.

These sleep remedies are too numerous to discuss them in any detail in this short article, but they include melatonin and valerian root, two natural alternatives to sleeping pills, as well as aromatherapy, color or chromatherapy and guided relaxation and meditation. Chamomile or lavender teas and infusions are also an excellent natural remedy for managing various sleep disorders.

Sleep disorder centers are established mostly in hospitals or in universities. Also, there are privately owned sleep disorder centers in the United States. The fees charged vary depending on the clinic and the nature of the sleep disorder. Normally, they range from a hundred to thousand dollars.

Sleep deprivation can suppress or damage the immune system and people whose immune systems are already compromised with various ailments and illnesses will suffer even more. It's reported that the average adult needs about nine hours of sleep, but many studies and people dispute this; report range from four hours to ten hours a night. Some of the most common sleep disorder treatments are directed at insomnia.

Although you may not be aware of what goes on as you sleep, you can perform your own sleep disorder test. You simply have to look at your own symptoms as a basic sleep disorder test. You should be worried for example if you wake up and don't feel refreshed, if you have trouble sleeping or if you wake up frequently at night or too early.

signs of sleep disorder:

1. irritability and sleepiness during the day

2. not being able to stay awake while sitting, reading or watching TV

3. falling asleep while driving

4. not being able to focus attention while doing school work, studies and home chores
