Gestational Diabetes Symptoms

By larissabrown at 2010-11-12 05:31:09
A gestational diabetes diet, along with additional treatments decreases successfully the problems caused by having abnormally large babies, as women with this problems often do. Gestational diabetes diet needs including a daily chart that keeps track of the quantity of calories eaten.

Gestational Diabetes Symptoms:

1-Unquenchable thirst
2-Increased tendency to urinate frequently
3-Excessive hunger
4-Fatigue, nausea and vomiting

In recent times, there has been meteoric rise in the number of pregnant women suffering with diabetes, a condition commonly known as pregnancy gestational diabetes. As per the available statistics, around 100,000 women every year suffer with gestational diabetes, a condition that is also called as glucose intolerance during pregnancy.

One of the most commonly observed diabetes types in pregnant women is gestational diabetes. In U.S only, an estimated 4% of mothers are affected by this condition and approximately 14% worldwide. During pregnancy, placenta supplies nutrition to the fetus. Apart from this, placenta also secretes certain hormones and proteins that are extremely essential in the normal development of the fetus.

When you are diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes, it may seem like your world is crashing down around you. A million thoughts run through your head, and you fear for the health of your child. It is important that you learn all you can about this disease and understand that you can have a normal healthy child with no risk to yourself or baby if you follow your physician's instructions.

Symptoms of diabetes come in different forms and degrees. Even though you may not be experiencing any noticeable symptoms does not mean that you are not a diabetic. Sometimes it takes weeks or even months for symptoms to become prevalent to where you will notice them.

This type of diabetes occurs in non-diabetic women when insulin produced by the pancreas stops being utilized in an improper manner. About three to six percent of pregnant women are affected by gestational diabetes. It begins in the fifth or the sixth month of pregnancy and generally disappears after childbirth. Gestational diabetes symptoms are easily identified with the help of your doctor.

I heard that some people with gestational diabetes could control their blood sugar level with diet alone. So, I preferred smaller meals rather than the big three meals for the day, to cure gestational diabetes. I avoided sugar beverages and sugar-laden foods like honey, jams, and jellies. They aggravate symptoms of gestational diabetes.

As per the available statistics, gestational diabetes appears in approximately 2-5% pregnancies. Ironically, no one is able to define the exact cause of this illness. According to experts, pregnancy gestational diabetes occurs due to interference of placental hormones with glucose metabolism.

Most women who develop this condition find it goes away after the baby's birth, and experience no more symptoms... although it is likely to return, and maybe worsen, through subsequent pregnancies. A small number of women continue on to have full-blown type 2 diabetes.

The signs of diabetes appear during pregnancy in women that have never been diagnosed with diabetes and thankfully most of the signs that do occur disappear after the delivery of the baby. It is important to remember however that women that do suffer from gestational diabetes are at a greater risk of developing type 2 diabetes later on in life.
