Prevention of colorectal cancer

By larissabrown at 2010-10-27 06:45:00
Colorectal cancer is a major health concern and public health problem in most of the Western countries despite widespread use of screening technique to detect early stages of this disease. In the United States alone more than 148,000 people are diagnosed with colorectal cancer each year.

Excluding skin cancer, colorectal cancer is the third commonest cancer diagnosed in the United States. Each year over 100,000 Americans are diagnosed with colon cancer and over 50 percent of these patients will die from colorectal cancer.

Prevention of colorectal cancer: Although the exact cause of colorectal cancer is not known, it is possible to prevent many colon cancers with the following:diet and exercise. It is important to manage the risk factors you can control, such as diet and exercise.

Cancer involving the upper part of the digestive tract or the small bowel (intestine) is rare. But cancer of the large bowel is very common. Colorectal cancer is said to be the fourth most common cancer worldwide. It is second only to lung cancer as a cause of death from cancer in the US.

Colorectal cancer is also known as colon or rectal cancer because it is a cancer that is found in either the colon or the rectum. In most cases colorectal cancer will begin as a polyp that develops on the lining of the colon and in most cases in benign. Even though these polyps may be benign at one point, they can turn cancerous at any time and when they do they will continue to grow and spread until detected.

If you have symptoms such as persistent stomach cramps, rectal bleeding or sudden change in bowel habits - see your doctor very soon. Risk factors for colorectal cancer are higher for people who have already had colorectal cancer or polyps, or for those who have inflammatory bowel disease like an ulcerative colitis.

One study found that "While there was a more than twofold increased risk of significant colorectal neoplasia in people who drink spirits and beer, people who drank wine had a lower risk. In our sample, people who drank more than eight servings of beer or spirits per week had at least a one in five chance of having significant colorectal neoplasia detected by screening colonoscopy.".

If there are polyps in the colon and rectum, this indicates an increased risk of cancer development. When the tumor is in the right colon, you may feel a cramping or a aching abdominal pain, anorexia (lack of appetite) nausea and vomiting, weight loss and tarry- coloured stools. If you are experiencing a partial or complete bowel obstruction, this is often the first sign of a tumor in the tranverse colon.

Since many people also show many other digestive disorders, toxins appear to have a lot to do with it. Toxins come from dietary and environmental factors. To prevent colorectal cancer, therefore, intestinal cleansing can be of help. This process can heal herniations of the colon and polyps, and can be quite soothing to the intestinal tract, since it helps to relieve it of its accumulated waste.

Treatment of colorectal cancer completely depends upon the stage it is at. In its initial stages, colorectal cancer can be treated successfully. However, as the disease advances, it becomes severe and therefore, the treatment also becomes complicated. Though there are a number of colorectal cancer treatments available these days, the success rates at advanced stages still low. So, one must try to avoid reaching this stage.
