Mood Disorders in Teenagers

By larissabrown at 2010-10-22 06:38:02
Mood disorders, whether depression, bipolar disorder, or some variation of the two, are more common in teenagers than we generally think. The problem from a diagnostic point of view is that teenagers are inconsistent, moody, and often test limits. It's the nature of the beast.

Mood disorders are also called affective disorders. Mood disorders have a major economic impact through associated health care costs as well as lost work productivity. A mood is an emotion or feeling that lasts a long time. Moods affect how we act. Your mood also affects how you feel about yourself and life in general. Mood disorder problems may be caused by changes in your life.

Mood disorders are characterized by continued feelings of sadness, despair, guilt, irritability, loss of appetite, constant fatigue and suicidal thoughts. Different people will have different combinations of these thoughts and feelings, making it important for sufferers to seek professional help to help sort through the various symptoms.

Some mood disorders can be related to a general medical condition, such as injuries, chronic medical illness, etc. All of these can result in symptoms of depression. Mood disorders can also be induced by substances such as drug abuse, medication, etc.

This all starts with introspection. This can take as long as you want it to take. You're going to have to take a hard look over your life. Try to pinpoint all of the times you were experiencing a mood disorder. Trace it back to its origin. Figure out how the disaster happened. Don't trace it back to only as far as someone else's fault, but look for the truth. The truth is going to be what helps you figure things out.

Most people who suffer from severe depression or disorders will have difficulties going through a day. Therefore these persons should get immediate medical attention to recover quickly and resume living a normal life. Additionally, if any individual suffers from mood disorders or depression, it's a good idea that they seek immediate medical consultation from a psychiatrist who will be able to evaluate and treat the them. If the disorder gets worse and prolonged, then the psychiatrist may prescribe anti-depressants among other medications to prevent the individual from going back into a state of depression.

According to the DSM-IV [Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition] mood disorders are "disorders that have a disturbance in mood as the predominant feature." While this may sound like an odd definition - it is a common way to define terms in the realm of mental health.

There are many types of mood disorders and a person needs to be diagnosed by a professional who uses the DSM-IV as the guide to see if that person meets the criteria for the particular disorder. And even within a diagnosis there are features and causes that can be further classified.

Major depressive disorder patients are typically a higher risk for suicide, however, with the treatment of a trained health professional, these tendencies are dramatically reduced. Also included under major depressive disorder are: melancholic depression which is a loss of pleasure, psychotic major depression in which case the sufferer has delusions or hallucinations, catatonic depression which is rare and a severe form of major depression.

It is important to learn about any bipolar mood disorder even more if there is a case in the family as the chief causes linked with the condition are genetic; some scientists are divided in their opinion about the disorder being caused due to environmental factors, but it is yet to be established.

Prescription drugs are very tightly controlled but legalized alcohol, over the counter drugs and food are consumed by almost everybody without any clear thought about what enters our bodies and what effect it or a combination of food substances will do to us.

Dysthymia is another common mood disorder that affects people. The person affected has a low grade of depression that lasts for at least a year and makes the person highly irritable. However, this can also be treated by general prescription and medication as well as some natural healing methods.

Depression-related mood disorders are symptoms that occur when a person is suffering from a health problem known as depression. These symptoms usually vary according to the type of depression you may be suffering from, age, or sex. To add on to this, depression- related mood disorders differ in their modes of treatment since some require medicinal treatment while some only need counseling and family support to go away.

Mood disorders are present in one-third to one-half of patients having chronic sleep problems. Many patients with mood disorders suffer from insomnia. Sadly, this problem is often undiagnosed. That's why its best to be aware of any sleep problems to alert one of possible mood disorders.
