Insect Bites Remedies

By larissabrown at 2010-10-01 07:02:29
Insect bites are normally painful. It always amazes me how such a tiny animal can impart so much pain onto someone millions of times larger. Some people are not badly effected by any insect bite, but others are badly affected, even suffering anaphylactic shock as a result.

Insect bites mostly look like little red bumps on your skin that are often itchy. They are the result of an injection of a foreign substance into your skin. The introduction of this foreign substance may trigger an allergic reaction, depending on the sensitivity of the person to that substance.

Spring is my favorite season. Flowers, warm weather, birds chirping, long walks, perfect weather and BUGS! I have spoken with many of my patients over the years about natural/home remedies that can be used to treat bug bites. I looked into each one and tried quite a few myself (I am a bug bite magnet!)

If a large area of your body is covered in bites, then you can take an antihistamine by mouth like Benadryl, Zyrtec, or Claritin. Benadryl is the best over-the-counter option for clearing up the itching, swelling, and pain caused by the bite, but it causes drowsiness in a big way so Zyrtec or Claritin may be better choices if you need to stay awake!

Mosquito bites usually are visible on a person's uncovered areas, such as hands, arms, legs, ankle, and the neck. They are easy to spot, as they swell easily. Flea bites mostly are visible in the ankle area and lower leg. They don't appear instantly but can become increasingly itchy after long hours. A spider bite literally is visible because you can see the bite mark in the middle of a visible swelling lump on the affected area of the skin. The skin's reaction also varies depending on the kind of spider.

The treatment of an insect or bug bite can be crucial to your health. If you do not properly treat your insect bites then they could become a bigger issue then you ever imagined. Here are some great tips on treating insect bites:

1-Pinpoint the location of the bite or sting.

2-If you have been stung, try your best to remove the stinger.

3-Use a warm wash rag with soap and water to lather the area and clean the wound.

4-Use a topical cream or ointment to apply on the irritated area.

5-Seek medical attention if the bite or sting seems to not get any better.

6-Understand how you got the bite or sting and pinpoint the type of insect that bit you.

7-Rest and relax. Do not panic.

Baking powder paste can help pull some of the poison out of the sting. It's not the only thing that can. The only use for tobacco I've ever had was as an emergency pulling agent. Damp tobacco placed over the sting may also pull some of the venom out.

Poultices ease pain, reduce swelling, and help heal. No wonder they're the number one natural choice for treating insect bites, bee and wasp stings.

Insect Bites can be a huge pain. We all know that. If you have been in the great outdoors and/or have been out the wilderness, you know how big of a pest that an insect bite or a bee sting can be. When you get a bite from an insect it is important to known and understand what exactly an insect bite is, how it is caused, and most importantly... how you can treat it so that it does not get too inflamed or infected.

Summer is approaching and that is the season for good weather, baring our legs, barbeques and mosquito bites! Mosquito bites can make the good weather unbearable and the scars that are often left behind are even worse. Many of us have ignored the advice of not scratching mosquito bites (what else can you do to an itch?) and we have the mosquito bite scars to prove it.

The outer layer of the body is referred to as skin. As it is the outermost layers, it protects the inner body against water loss and pathogens. There are different types of skins in humans which vary from dry to oily. In humans, it's also the largest organ weighing up to nine pounds. It also plays a vital role in controlling the body temperature by sweating. It has blood vessels and sweat glands which control the temperature. The immune cells present provide protection against infection. Apart from other functions, the skin acts as a sensory organ. The skin itself is made up of different layers. Each layer performs its own specific function. Nails are much thicker and tougher form of skin. Similarly hair is also part of the skin.

The most immediate danger of a bee, wasp, or hornet sting is true allergy, an anaphylactic reaction. Many people confuse a large local reaction with an allergy. If you develop swelling, redness, discomfort, and possibly itching at the site of a sting BUT nowhere else, this is a local reaction. If you develop ANY symptoms anywhere other than the sting, this is likely an allergy. Hives or welts that occur on a part of the body away from the sting are one symptom. Difficulty breathing, rapid heart rate, nausea, faintness, or a general feeling of unwellness are serious symptoms as well. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any of these symptoms. Call 911 if needed, especially if the onset is rapid or severe.

Insect bites are usually harmless but can be annoying and painful. They can cause pain and inflammation to the spot of the bite. Herbal remedies can be helpful in dealing with both the pain and swelling of the insect bite. If you are allergic to insect stings, are stung multiple times or are stung on the neck you should seek medical attention.
